Richard qualified as a solicitor in 1993 and joined Weightmans in 2024 and has over 24 years’ experience in the field of police misconduct.

Richard spent the early part of his career in criminal defence, and in 2001 began working in the field of Police Misconduct where he has gained significant, wide-ranging experience in advising in relation to investigations and proceedings before Gross Misconduct Panels, Accelerated Misconduct Hearings, Police Appeals Tribunals and Stage 3 UPP Gross Incompetence proceedings all over England and Wales and the Isle of Man. He has extensive advocacy experience and was previously responsible for delivering advocacy training on a national level to the Police Federation. Richard has extensive drafting skills and is available to draft documents for hearings and appeals.

In his career which now spans over 30 years, Richard has a considerable background of dealing with challenging, sensitive and complex cases including homicide; post incident procedure for death and serious injury following police contact including shootings, providing direct legal input to newly qualified firearms officers; sexual offending and impropriety; unauthorised use of systems; excess force including TASER cases; domestic abuse. 

Richard has wide-ranging experience of Coroners Court work including Article 2 compliant and jury inquests where he has regularly represented interested persons as advocate, most recently representing the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in a 5-day jury inquest.

Richard has a keen interest in languages and is fluent in French with a good working knowledge of Russian and Italian.
