Notification of both employers’ liability and public liability claims suggest volumes have stabilised
New claim notifications of both employers’ liability and public liability claims for the full calendar year 2023 were remarkably consistent with 2022 – suggesting that volumes had stabilised following the significant reductions seen in 2020 and 2021 compared to the pre-COVID baseline of 2019.
Although data released by the Online Injury Claims Portal Company showed that the 2024 quarter one figures were consistent with those in 2023, delayed and recently published quarter two data (covering the period from April to June 2024) evidences a significant reduction in claims volumes.
The data
Taken in isolation, quarter two volumes for both EL and PL showed reductions of 24% (EL) and 26% (PL), compared to 2023 monthly average notifications of 2,302 (EL) and 3,086 (PL), respectively.
Aggregating year to date volumes (quarter one and quarter two in 2024), notifications are still down by 11% (EL) and 14% (PL), compared to 2023.
Commentary
We have in previous articles explored the reasons for the significant reduction in EL and PL volumes post- pandemic. Whilst recognising that the quarter two data may prove to be an anomaly, the conclusion that the personal injury market has now achieved stabilised and consistent levels of new claim notifications may need to be rethought.
