Education

A wide range of legal services for the education sector

Whether in the public or private sector, at LEA, schools or national level, the education sector operates within a complex and ever changing legal framework. Interaction between employers, governors, staff and students creates a complex range of responsibilities and risks, and expert assistance is needed to keep abreast of developments and ensure that they are properly implemented

Weightmans' Education team has vast experience at all levels of the court hierarchy, backed by an in-depth understanding of the legal, social and political background. What’s more, our team includes ex-local government solicitors with a unique understanding of the intense scrutiny under which this sector operates.

To maximise the effectiveness of our partnership with you, we will first assign an experienced legal adviser to assess your unique needs and concerns and create a bespoke, cost-effective legal support package.

This will include expert advice and guidance on a wide range of issues, including admissions and exclusion appeals  general policies and procedures, complaints such as bullying and failure to educate, and special educational needs and disability discrimination matters.

On a practical level, we will advise on risk management issues and HSE investigations, and represent your establishment in any employers’ or public liability cases. Weightmans is a recognised national leader in civil actions brought against LEAs and schools, for workplace accidents and incidents that occur during school, sports and extra-curricular activities.

To ensure all stakeholders are kept right up to date with the latest legislation, our support includes training for governors, LEA officers and in-house legal departments, as well as to staff on INSET days, backed by regular legal bulletins.

Along side this bespoke service, we can also offer advice on a range of general legal issues, including employment, commercial disputes, property transactions, financial matters and data protection.
